One week after opening up Southeast Conference play at home, the Washington Demon softball team (2-2 overall) returns to the diamond tonight in Fairfield. The first game in seven days for the Demons comes against the No. 6 Fairfield Trojans (3-0 overall) in a pair of league games. Washington will look to end a nearly three year losing streak against Fairfield, dropping the last 12 meetings. The last victory Washington had over Fairfield came on June 17, 2013, a 4-2 victory in game one of a doubleheader.
Washington recorded their first conference victory in nearly two years last Thursday, winning game two against Fort Madison (3-4 overall), 6-2 in a weather shortened six innings. Sophomores Megan Mitchell and Brooke Stout scored two runs a piece in game two victory. Flashes of lightning forced a small delay in the game with the Demons leading 6-2 in the top of the sixth. The game was called a final 20 minutes after the initial delay was issued. The victory was Washington’s first over a Southeast Conference school since July 10, 2014 when the Demons beat the Bloodhounds, 10-5, in Fort Madison.
Fairfield concluded a four-game home stand tonight against Washington. They held their home opener Tuesday, hosting a pair of games against the Sigourney Savages (4-1 overall) of Class 1A. Due to wet weather, the Trojans and Savages were only able to get one game in, a 3-2 victory for Fairfield.
