Lone Tree’s star running back honored his classmate and fellow team captain this past Friday during the Lions’ week four victory over the Cardinal Comets.

Senior Jared Hudson had another monster rushing performance for the Lions, running for a game high 227 yards and two touchdowns in Lone Tree’s 48-6 rout of the Comets. Lion head football coach Chad Shield said Hudson used the game to honor one of his injured teammates, “One neat thing from last night was (Jared) Hudson was wearing Greg Feldman’s jersey as a tribute to him.” Shield said, “It was just a really neat thing to do and it was all Jared’s idea.”

Feldman was injured during a 12 yard run during the Lions’ 62-36 victory over the Van Buren Warriors on September 11. Doctors revealed Feldman had a season ending injury.

Shield was sombered by news of Feldman’s prognosis. “Greg Feldman is every coach’s dream.” Shield said, “He did everything on the field and in the weight room at 100 percent. He set himself up to have a great senior season on the field and it saddens me to see a guy who worked so hard, has such high character, and has all the intangibles to have his season cut short like that. ”

The injury bug has hit the Lions hard this month. Junior Michael Schmidt, a member of the Lions’ leadership council, was lost for the season after suffering a knee injury during a non-contact drill in practice after the Lions’ week one victory over North Mahaska. Feldman and Schmidt were all-district performers last season, Feldman a first team all-district defensive utility player. Schmidt was an all-district honorable mention offensive lineman.

Despite the early season adversity, the Lions are 3-1 overall, and are undefeated in Class A District 6. The Lions are outscoring their district opponents 110-42.

The Lions will battle for the district lead this week as they travel to Winfield-Mount Union High School to face the undefeated Wolves (4-0 overall; 2-0 Class A District 6). W-MU has outscored their opponents 180-6 this season, but their first four victories have come against teams with a combined record of 2-10.

Kickoff of the district battle between the Lions and Wolves is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Winfield-Mount Union High School.
