For a third time in program history, the Washington Demons girls’ golf team is the best team in the state. The Demons battled seven other schools in the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Class 4A Girls State Golf Tournament at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown.

The Demons, who enjoyed a seven stroke lead after Monday’s first round, shot a tournament best 347 as a team to claim the state championship by 24 strokes over Humboldt. Dubuque Wahlert, who trailed the Demons by seven strokes after day one, finished in third with 733 strokes.

Freshman Sarah Nacos completed her first varsity golf season as the top golfer in the state, winning medalist honors with a 13 over 155 for the tournament. Her tournament included two birdies, 19 pars, and 15 bogeys.

Junior Deanna Peiffer ended her season as the eighth best golfer in the state, posting a 34 over 176 for the two day tournament. Senior Sarah Waite tied for ninth place in her final high school golf tournament, shooting a 37 over 179 for the 36 hole event.

This is the first state title for Washington in any sport since the girls’ golf team won back-to-back Class 3A titles in 2007 and 2008.
