Three people died and 304 people were injured in Iowa last year in the 730 crashes in which drivers were distracted by the use of a phone or other device, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drivers who text are 70 percent less likely to stay in their lane.
All cell phone usage is illegal for all learner permit and intermediate license holders in Iowa and all texting while driving is banned.
