The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls golf team was not to be denied Wednesday, as they clinched a bid to the Class 2A State Golf Tournament in a Regional Final at Kalona.
With only the top two teams getting a spot at State, Mid-Prairie found themselves in fourth place with only four holes remaining, trailing Durant, Centerville, and Oelwein, after holding a lead at the turn. The Golden Hawks made a furious charge late, gaining 12 shots on the field in that stretch to shoot a team score 383, pass the Big Redettes and Huskies, and finish second. After the meet, the Hawks talked with KCII Sports about the tournament and what it means to be going to State. “We were not playing our best golf, but the last four holes we definitely turned things around. It was a blast out there! We didn’t know we were down. Four holes left, didn’t know we were in fourth place, but we had to put our head down and play good golf. We finished strong. We were nervous, we thought we were really close to not getting second. It’s always nerve-racking, even if you know you win. You never know what could happen in those few minutes. We’re excited to go to State!”
Durant was the Regional winner with their 381. Allee Booten of Burlington Notre Dame was the individual medalist with a 76. Individual scores for the Golden Hawks included Olivia Swartzendruber sixth with an 87, Morgyn Bender 95, Macie Ihrig 98, Delani Blum 103, Noelle Nelson 104, and Paiton Chittick 108.
This is the Golden Hawks fourth team trip to the state tournament in the last five seasons. They will play Thursday and Friday in the Class 2A Tournament at the American Legion Course in Marshalltown.
