
A Sigourney man has been arrested on murder and burglary charges following an Ottumwa man’s death on Tuesday. Michael Joe Johnson has been arrested.
On April 21, at approximately 5:35 a.m., the Ottumwa Police Department received a 911 call advising a male had been shot. Officers from the Ottumwa Police Department and the Wapello County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene and found a male victim, identified as 45-year-old Jeremy Ray Showalter, of Ottumwa with a gunshot wound. Showalter was transported to the Ottumwa Regional Health Center for treatment, and later died from his injuries.
Agents and Crime Scene Technicians from the Iowa Department of Public Safety Division of Criminal Investigation were requested to assist with the investigation and processing of the crime scene. Tactical Officers from the Iowa State Patrol also responded to Ottumwa to assist in the search for the suspect.
At approximately 4:22 p.m. Tuesday, officers arrested 24-year-old Johnson in relation to this incident. Johnson was charged with murder in the first degree, a class A felony, and first degree burglary, a class B felony.
The investigation is ongoing. If anyone has information regarding this incident they are asked to contact the Ottumwa Police Department. There is no ongoing threat to the public regarding this incident.
Johnson is being held in the Wapello County Jail.
