The boys and girls of Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union soccer had a great day on Friday, with both teams shutting down Wapello. The boys won 9-0, while the girls held on strong for a 3-0 victory.
The Columbus boys were on top of Wapello right out of the gate, picking up four first half goals to lead 4-0 at the break. Despite having a comfortable lead, the Wildcats didn’t stop there, scoring five more for good measure to pick up their first win of the year.
Columbus allowed just one shot on goal all game. The Wildcat boys are now 1-1-2 on the season, while Wapello drops to 0-2.
The Columbus girls, like the boys, dominated from the jump. The Wildcats attempted 23 shots over the course of 80 minutes, 12 of which were on goal, and three of which found the back of the net. Defensively, there wasn’t much work to be done, but goalkeeper Sarai Martinez saved all three shots she faced. Despite the dominance, Columbus only led 1-0 at the half, but two second half goals allowed a bit of breathing room, as Columbus cruised to its second victory of the season.
Naveiah Garza scored two of the three Columbus goals, with Luz Camargo adding the other. Camargo, Iris Garza, and Denise Ascensio picked up an assist each. Columbus improves to 2-1, while Wapello falls to 0-3.
