The Engineered Plastic Components (EPC) plant in Kalona announced that it will soon close its doors.
The closure is a third layer in a ripple effect from layoffs by the Whirlpool Corporation. Whirlpool has laid off hundreds of employees over the past year, and the Iowa Machinists Union has accused Whirlpool of sending those jobs to Mexico. It was reported by the IAM Union that 341 employees would be laid off by the Amana plant. The EPC Kalona plant relied on Amana Whirlpool as their main customer, so as a result, the plant decided to close.
On March 10, EPC Kalona halted their second and third shifts. An exact date when the EPC in Kalona will close its doors is unknown. According to the Washington Economic Development Group, the facility employs 153 people.
The facility was not listed on the Iowa Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) system as of Thursday. The WARN Act in Iowa requires 60 calendar days of written notice when there is a plant closing or mass layoff for employers with 100 or more employees.
EPC Kalona declined to comment. The corporate office for EPC could not be reached for comment.
