hillcrest-3-on-3

The students of Hillcrest Academy participated in a three-on-three coed basketball tournament that was held during the school’s homeroom periods.

Every grade level at Hillcrest has a combined homeroom during the school day. School guidance counselor Tom Carey and Hillcrest office managers Amy and Haley Tackaberry organized the tournament which Carey said was originally born as a learning experience. The students were asked to give adjectives to describe how they would look back on their time at Hillcrest when they graduated. Adjectives given included fun, memorable and faithful. The students were then broken up into groups based on their choices., and Carey says this is where the idea for the tournament came from.

“One of our office managers, Amy (Tackaberry), worked with a group on developing this tournament as a fun thing. So we had a sign up, and we put them on teams. We have a 15 minute homeroom every day in the middle of the afternoon, so we’d have different kids from the 9th through 12th play on the teams we assigned them to.”

Carey also said there was a faculty team, which lost immediately. The winner of the tournament was a team of boys composed of sophomores Owen Slaughbaugh, Charles Hughes, and Gibson Scott.
