The second legislative briefing of the session was held in Washington City Hall Friday, where constituents were able to address Iowa State District 92 Representative Heather Hora and Iowa State District 46 Senator Dawn Driscoll.

One of the talking points repeated by attendees was a bill outlining vaccine requirements in schools. Iowa House lawmakers recently advanced a bill that would eliminate vaccine requirements for Iowa students entering elementary or secondary school.

Current law requires that Iowa students are vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, measles and rubella, hepatitis B, varicella and meningitis unless they are granted a medical or religious exemption.

The bill titled House File 2171, would end that requirement and make Iowa the first state to eliminate its requirement for children to be vaccinated to go to school.

Other topics included veterans service offices funding, Iowa cancer rates, and water quality.

The third and final legislative briefing will be held on April 3rd.
