Washington County will begin initial steps to replace a bridge on 110th Street northwest of Kalona with a short closure on Monday, March 9th.
The road will be closed to traffic at the bridge just west of Juniper Avenue to allow the contractor to perform some pre-construction activities. The work is expected to take two days and once the initial work is completed, the road will be reopened to traffic.
The contract for this project was awarded to Iowa Bridge and Culvert, L.C. of Washington, for $857,116.90 and will be completed in two phases.
After the March work is completed, the contractor will return in early summer and close the road to traffic for replacement of the existing bridge. The expected closure for construction of the new bridge will take approximately four months, weather permitting.
The existing bridge is 125-feet-long and 20-feet-wide and was built in 1953. The new bridge will be a 130-feet long 30-feet wide concrete slab bridge. Once this existing bridge is replaced, the new structure will eliminate the need for a weight restriction and will allow traffic to meet easier on the bridge.
