
In the latest chapter of the Winfield-Mt. Union and WACO Warrior boys and girls basketball rivalry, it was a clean sweep for the Wolves boys and girls in Winfield in February.
The WMU girls opened the night with a come-from-behind 40-34 win. The Warriors jumped out early, leading 13-8 after the first and 24-18 at the half. The Lady Wolves erased the entire deficit in the third, going on a 14-5 run that spanned the full frame, on top 32-29 after three. WMU won the fourth quarter 8-5 to finish the win. The Wolves shot 34% in the win with 34 rebounds, 13 assists and 10 steals. Madisen Kellogg had a monster 33 point, 12 rebound double double. Quin Smith added nine rebounds. The win moved WMU to 2-18 on the year and was their first in the Southeast Iowa Superconference. WACO dropped to 7-13.
In the boys matchup, it was a Wolves winner 54-31. WACO started with an 8-7 lead after one, only to see WMU control the action the rest of the night. The Wolves won the second period 14-6 to go on top 21-14 at half. In the second 16 minutes, the Wolves outscored the Warriors 33-17 to lock down the win and season sweep of WACO. The Wolves out shot the Warriors 42-24% from the floor, knocking down 10 total threes. WMU won the glass 35-27, assists, 15-8, and had eight steals. WACO won the turnover battle 13-11. Leader for the Wolves was Nick Sparrow with a game high 21 points. Cody Milks went double double with 16 points and 12 boards. Holden Hughes and Hayden Shelman each scored eight for WACO, Hughes added eight rebounds. WMU improved to 13-5 with the win, while WACO went to 10-9.
