Avian influenza has been detected in birds in southeast Iowa, including some in Keokuk County. According to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, highly pathogenic avian influenza was found in backyard flocks in both Keokuk and Van Buren counties. Both were multi-species flocks.

These are the third and fourth cases of this in Iowa so far this year. Highly pathogenic avian influenza is often fatal to domestic birds, and it can be carried by wild birds who may not appear sick.

Poultry producers and people who own backyard flocks are encouraged to bolster biosecurity measures and practices to protect their flocks. If you suspect avian influenza in your flock, it is recommended to call a veterinarian immediately. In addition, possible cases must be reported to the state at 515-281-5305.

Also, anyone who finds 20 or more sick or dead wild birds in a small area should report their findings to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
