
The city of Columbus Junction hosts its 14th annual St. David’s Day celebration this Saturday, February 28th, celebrating the country of Wales and those with Welsh heritage in the community.
As part of the celebrations, a parade will make its way through Columbus Junction starting at 1 p.m. The parade will start under the viaduct at 1 p.m. before making its way to the American Legion. Participants are encouraged to bring their Welsh flags and banners bearing their Welsh names. The festivities will then continue at the American Legion, with food provided.
St. David’s Day falls on March 1st each year, and is a celebration of the patron saint of Wales. St. David was a teacher and religious figure who lived in Wales in the sixth century. During his lifetime, he was renowned for his teachings and his ability to perform miracles. David was officially recognized as a Catholic saint in 1120. The day of his death, March 1st, was declared a national festival in Wales during the 18th century.
