Washington freshman Kaeden Zear finished in the top half of the field at the Class 1A Iowa High School Bowling Championships in Waterloo on Tuesday, finishing in 14th place out of 32 bowlers.

Zear finished with a three-game total of 681, 18 pins shy of finishing within the top eight and moving on to bracket play. Zear’s second game, a 266, was the second highest total of the entire preliminary round, trailing only Durant’s Draven Cole, who bowled a 279 in his final game.

The top eight bowlers from the preliminary round were seeded and advanced to bracket play. Maquoketa’s Landon Costello was crowned state champion after defeating Shenandoah’s Clay Fouch in the championship match, 249 to 246.
