
A pair of KCII-area schools took the floor for a Southeast Iowa Superconference boys and girls hoops doubleheader when Columbus hosted Winfield-Mt. Union.
The girls contest went the Wildcats way 66-56. The visitors held a 15-13 lead after one. Columbus erased the deficit with 16-11 second quarter, on top 29-26 at half. The Wildcats parlayed that into a 23-14 third as the offenses heated up, extending their advantage to 52-40 going to the fourth. The ‘Cats wouldn’t let the Wolves get any closer as they finished the 10 point win. The Wildcats out shot WMU 39-35%, winning rebounds 40-30, assists 19-14, steals 13-11 and turnovers 19-17. Ellie Sanders led the Wildcats with 21 points, Isabel Rendon scored 19, and Kennedy Woepking 15. Kymila Bacon had 12 rebounds and Iris Garza six assists and five steals. For the Wolves, Madisen Kellogg poured in 25 points with five steals and three assists, Shaye Nelson scored 11 and Quin Smith had 13 rebounds. The Wildcats went to 9-9 with the win, while the Wolves fell to 1-18.
In the nightcap the WMU boys got the road win 61-50. The Wolves fast starts to each half put them over the top, using a 15-6 run that lasted the full first quarter to take an early lead. The Wildcats cut into the margin, trailing 33-27 at half. WMU outscored Columbus 16-10 in the third to push the lead to double digits and that proved to be enough to finish the win. The Wolves out shot Columbus 39-32%, winning the boards 38-28, assists 14-12, steals 6-5 and turnovers 10-9. Cody Milks put up a monster 24 point, 15 rebound double double for the Wolves. Max Edwards was right behind him with 23 points. Top man for Columbus was Drake Marin with 25 points. Ellis Hills-Carrier scored a dozen with seven boards. WMU was 12-5 with the win as Columbus went to 7-10.
