The Washington Demon bowling team fell just a little short of heading to state as a unit but still managed to send one to the state bowling meet next week.
Freshman Kaeden Zear will be heading to Waterloo after finishing second place at the state qualifying meet in Monticello on Monday. Zear bowled a 213, 267, and 227 across three games, totaling 707 pins. That put him in second behind Monticello’s Quinn Thomas, who bowled a 743. The top four bowlers at the state qualifying meet move on to state. Fellow Demons Mitchell Zieglowsky and Cooper Zahs narrowly missed that cutoff line, placing within the top 10 but taking seventh and eighth, respectively.
Teamwise, Washington bowled a 2839, good for third place out of six teams. The Demons placed ahead of conference foe Fairfield, Knoxville, and Pella Christian, but fell just short of Monticello and Benton. The Panthers, hosting and bowling at their own house, qualified as a team with a 3050. Only the top team from each qualifying meet is moved on to the state meet.
Zear will next bowl at Cadillac XBC in Waterloo. The Class 1A individual tournament is held on Tuesday, January 24.
