A new type of scam call is making the rounds through southeast Iowa, and is attempting to collect “bail bond money” from incarcerated inmates’ families by impersonating local sheriff’s offices.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office drew attention to the scam in a statement Thursday. The sheriff’s office states they will never call and ask for bail bond money for inmates. In Henry County, bail bonds must be posted either online or at the Henry County Courthouse. If you suspect fraudulent activity from any type of call, you are encouraged to hang up and contact law enforcement immediately.

To slow down or stop scam calls, consider adding your number to the Federal Trade Commission’s National Do Not Call Registry. You can register your home or cell phone number at www.donotcall.gov, or by calling 1-888-382-1222.
