The Washington Demons set a new season high for points, and also tied their lowest total of points allowed, in a 63-21 drubbing of SEC foe Fairfield in the first round of the Class 3A Region 5 tournament Saturday.

The Demons and Trojans were playing for the third time this season Saturday, and like the first two contests, there was very little drama to be had. Washington jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, and that would be that. There were no lead changes, and no ties, just a steadily increasing Washington lead. The Demons led 16-10 at the end of the first, but outscored the Trojans 19-8 in the second quarter to take a 35-18 lead into the half.

The second half saw Washington completely shut down the Fairfield offense. The Demons came very close to shutting out the Trojans in the third quarter, but a late foul and a split trip at the free throw line gave Fairfield a single point, with the Demons ultimately going up 48-19 into the third quarter. Finally, Washington again almost shut out the Trojans in the fourth for good measure, but a late steal and layup gave Fairfield its one and only field goal for the entire second half. A 15-2 fourth quarter gave Washington the 63-21 win.

Washington’s 63 points set a new season high for the team, surpassing the 62 they scored against Fairfield back on January 29th. The 21 points scored by Fairfield is also the lowest total allowed by Washington since the team allowed 21 to Oskaloosa on January 17th. Head coach Colin Mulford says the team played extremely well on both sides of the ball. “I thought defensively was really, really good. Only giving up 3 points in the second half, no matter who you play, is always very impressive, and its great to do. The girls played really well just all together. You could see in that first half and second half just the ball movement and the patience we had against their zone was just really good to see.”

Adalyn Long led the Washington scoring effort with 13. Leighton Messinger and Oaklee Sobaski each added 11. Fairfield was led by Anna McAvan off the bench with 6 points, her final bucket being the only one scored by Fairfield in the second half. Washington improves to 12-10 for the season, while Fairfield ends its season at 3-16.

Washington will next face off against Tipton. The Tigers defeated South Tama County 45-24 in their first round matchup. Washington and Tipton met earlier this season, with the state-ranked Tigers holding on at home for a 48-40 win,
