The Columbus girls’ season has come to an end with a 58-45 loss to Van Buren County in the Class 2A Region 8 tournament Saturday.

In a rematch of the SEISC Shootout, the Wildcats put forth a better performance against the Warriors, but couldn’t get enough scoring going to match the pace of Van Buren. The teams were tied 13-13 after the first, but fell behind 29-25 at the half. Columbus did its best to stay close for as long as possible, but the Warriors extended their lead to 8 by the end of the third, and a 13-8 fourth quarter sealed the deal, giving Van Buren the 58-45 win and ending the Wildcats’ season.

Isabel Rendon, playing her final high school game, led the team in scoring with 13. Juniors Iris Garza and Ellie Sanders had 10 each. Senior Kennedy Woepking, despite a quiet scoring night, still pulled down 15 rebounds.

Columbus ends its season at 11-11. The Wildcats graduate four this year, with Rendon and Woepking joined by fellow contributors Kinlee Brown and Naveiah Garza. Van Buren, who has not played a team other than Columbus since the beginning of February, will face off against Regina Catholic in the next round of the Class 2A Region 8 Tournament.
