A new scholarship opportunity is available to area students in memory of local farmer Dick Gallagher.

The Washington Keokuk County Corn Growers are offering $1,000 scholarships in memory of Dick Gallagher, a founding board member whose dedication to agriculture and the local corn industry left a lasting impact on both counties and the state of Iowa.

To be eligible, students must be a high school senior graduating in 2026 with plans to enter an accredited program with a minimum completion time of two years. The application requires that students explain how his or her choice of career will relate to the corn industry. For example, a student majoring in food sciences, environmental science or engineering, will need to relate their course of study and career choices back to the agriculture industry.

The scholarship is not restricted to students majoring in an agriculture field. A student must be a resident of Washington or Keokuk County to qualify, and the student or parent must be a current member of the Iowa Corn Growers Association. The deadline to apply is April 1st.
