For the third time this season, the Washington Demon girls will meet conference foe Fairfield, but this time with seasons on the line, as the Demons and Trojans meet in the first round of the Class 3A, Region 5 Tournament Saturday at Washington.
Washington is 11-10 on the season, and have dropped their last two games to Williamsburg and Burlington. However, Washington has had the clear advantage in both prior match ups with the Trojans this season, with the Demons taking two 20-plus point wins. In December, Washington won on the road, 53-29, with Adalyn Long’s 21 leading the way. In the January rematch at home, the Demons came out on top once more, 62-36, behind 19 points from Leighton Messinger on the Demons’ Senior Night.
Since the last loss to Washington, the Trojans have lost three more games in a row, extending their losing streak to seven and putting their record at 3-15 coming into Saturday night’s contest. Fairfield has struggled to score this season, with no individual scorer averaging above 8 points per game and the team averaging just 35 points per night. The Trojans set their season high of 64 in an early season win over a struggling Knoxville squad, and did not pass the 50-point line until their final game of the regular season, a 60-50 loss to Davis County.
Saturday’s postseason contest can be heard on FM106.1, the KCII1 app, and kciiradio.com. Pregame will start at 6:30 p.m., followed by tip-off at 7.
