
Boys basketball representatives from the Southeast Iowa Superconference North Division, Highland and Lone Tree, both came up short Friday against their counterparts from the South Division in the conference’s annual shoot out event. For the Huskies, it was a 76-69 loss to Van Buren. Highland’s start was fast, up 15-8 after the first. The Warriors answered with an 18-9 run in the second to take a 26-24 lead to half, both team exploded on offense after break. Van Buren outscored Highland 50-45 in the second half. The Huskies out shot the Warriors 48-41%. Van Buren won the glass 42-25, assists 18-17 steals 16-15 and turnovers 22-19. The Warrior’s Will Cocherell led with 26 points, Kinnick Millard had a 17 point, 10 rebound double double and Jace Duncan added 15 points with seven assists and six steals. It was a trio of Huskies in double figures with Bryce Hazelett’s 22 points leading the scoring column, Landon Roling went double double with 20 points and 12 boards. Presten Smith finished with a dozen points. Van Buren is 6-15 with the win and Highland is 3-17 with the loss.
Lone Tree was on the wrong end of a 71-54 final against New London in Keosauqua. The Tigers out shot the Lions 51-42%, winning the glass 32-24, assists 12-8 and turnovers 16-11. Brigham Porter and London Franklin had the high games for New London with 22 points each. Domonic Garcia’s 17 points led Lone Tree with Cade Willoz scoring 15 and Reece Holbrook 10. New London is 5-16 after the win at the Lions fall to 4-15.
