In a marquee doubleheader over the weekend at Solon High School, the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls were beaten in both ends of a non-conference doubleheader. The girls contest saw the No. 10 Lady Spartans hold off a comeback from the No. 12 Hawks 67-59. A fast start and eight first half threes helped Solon to a 19-9 lead after one and 42-19 lead at half. Solon pushed the advantage to as many as 28 in the third quarter before foul trouble opened the door to a Golden Hawk comeback. Mid-Prairie didn’t waste the chance, scoring 20 in a row to get within eight going to the fourth. In the final period, the Hawks would cut the lead to four, three different times, the final in the last 45 seconds, but would get no closer. Live on the postgame show, Golden Hawk head coach Jenny Hobbs talked about the anatomy of the comeback. “(In the second half) we just brought the intensity. We can play defense, press, run and jump with any team in the state. We brought the energy. We got some steals, we drew fouls, they got in foul trouble, we started hitting shots. I thought we didn’t play that badly in the first half, but we couldn’t buy a basket. We missed a lot of layups. Once we started scoring and set the press and got steals, it just snowballed. You can see where we can really get going!”

Mid-Prairie shot 33% as a team and made five threes to Solon’s 11. The Hawks had 35 rebounds, 23 steals and 17 assists, but committed 23 turnovers. Four Hawks got to double figures led by 19 points for Morgyn Bender with nine steals, 16 for Tessa Bombei a dozen for Brooklyn Schneider and 10 for Jovi Evans. Each team leaves at 5-2.

The boys matchup featured a pair of unbeaten teams, and it was Solon that left that way 75-34. The Spartans started the game on an 11-2 run and never looked back. They were up 22-10 after one, 40-16 at half and 65-31 after three before closing the game on a 15-3 run. Bryce Henry scored nine to lead Mid-Prairie, Tate McCollum had 21 on seven threes to lead Solon. The Spartans are 8-0 while Mid-Prairie drops to 5-1. The Golden Hawk boys and girls travel to Alburnett Tuesday.
