Take steps to prevent the spread of illness this winter, as influenza and strep cases rise in the local area.

According to Washington County Hospital and Clinics, this week influenza A and B activity is substantial with strep cases high. COVID levels are low.

People are reminded to wash their hands often with soap and water, and remember to cover coughs and sneezes. If you are feeling unwell, stay home. The Centers for Disease Control recommends people over six months old to get a flu vaccine annually with the vaccine helping to reduce the severity of illness.

According to the most recent Iowa Respiratory Virus Surveillance Report from Health and Human Services, there have been three cumulative influenza deaths and 23 COVID-19 deaths in the state in the 2025-26 reporting period.
