As the end of 2025 approaches, public libraries across Washington County are looking back on this year and making plans for 2026.

Back in March, all three Washington County libraries– Washington, Kalona, and Wellman, received the Harvey Holden Award from the Washington Economic Development Group. The award was given for the libraries’ dedication to their respective communities.

The Washington Public Library added the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to its offerings this year, allowing parents the opportunity to sign their children up to receive free books monthly up to their 5th birthday. The WPL also continued courses in its MakeIT space.

Wellman Public Library Director Carrie Geno says it’s been a great year for the library, with a drastic increase in visits and lots of new programming. The library’s plans for 2026 include the addition of a children’s librarian, as well as an increase in adult programming. Geno says the library will also continue its popular summer reading program.

Meanwhile, over in Kalona, Public Library Director Olivia Kahler says a highlight of the library’s 2025 is the revamping of the Kalona Public Library Foundation. That includes new members, new bylaws, and fundraising efforts to continue supporting the library’s efforts. The library also received a sizable grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation. In 2026, Kahler says the library will continue with some of its more popular programming while introducing some new opportunities, such as a family-focused escape room planned for January.

Both Geno and Kahler suggest that the best way to support your local library is to swing by and get involved in the various programming that they provide.
