There are many options available when putting up the tree for Christmas time. While some people may go for the artificial tree, others may choose to go for a real, authentic tree.

If choosing to go with a real tree, it is important to note that there are several things to keep in mind to reduce the fire risk of having one in the home. When picking a tree, pick one that has fresh, green needles that do not fall off the tree when touched. When it comes to time to place the tree, the National Fire Protection Association recommends placing it at least three feet away from any heat source. That includes fireplaces, candles, radiators, heat vents or lights.

The NFPA also recommends using lights that work with where you’ll be placing the tree. If the tree is to be indoors, use lights that are for indoor use, and vice versa if the tree is to be placed outdoors. If cords or wires are found to be broken or frayed, replace them immediately. Always turn off Christmas lights before going to bed. Trees should also be watered daily to ensure that they stay fresh and green as long as possible.

After Christmas, a tree can be kept up until it dries out. A dried-out tree becomes a massive fire risk and should not be kept inside the home, or even outside against the home. Check for recycling options to get rid of the tree in a safe, fire-proof manner.
