In an effort to keep residents safe, the Washington Police Department would like residents to remember to register with the Community Camera Program.
This program encourages Washington residents to register their home security/surveillance camera systems with the Police Department. Washington Police Chief Jim Lester shares more, “If you have cameras on the outside of your home, like many people do now. The city website does have a link for our community camera program, you can register those cameras. You’re just letting us know, here’s where I live, I do have cameras, and if we do have something happen in your neighborhood we are able to reach out to you and ask you to check for a particular time and see if there’s a person or a vehicle in the area that we are interested in because of a crime that has been committed.”
Having systems registered with the Police Department means investigators can quickly identify nearby cameras that may have captured the criminal activity. Officers will not have remote access or be able to access live-feeds of any registered cameras. The program is completely voluntary and no one is obligated to release recordings to the Police Department. All information provided is for official use only and personal information will remain confidential.
The goal of the Washington Community Camera Program is to deter crime and promote public safety through collaboration between the Police Department and the community.
