The Kalona YMCA and the Mid-Prairie Community School District are once again partnering up to support local families this holiday season.
The Christmas Assistance Program helps families provide Christmas gifts for their children in the Mid-Prairie School District aged 18 and under. Families are not asked to report why assistance is needed. The program provides items and a list for the families to choose gifts. They do the shopping at the YMCA, giving them a say in what is eventually gifted to the children in need.
Mid-Prairie Middle School Counselor Laura Schmitt says they typically receive a wide variety of gifts to offer to the children. “There really is a wide array, but we definitely see a lot of clothing, whether that’s winter gear, or shirts, or shorts or shoes. Sports items, basketball gear, things like that. And then like, hobbies. So, whether that’s books, for younger girls you might see makeup kits, or you might see LEGO sets. I’d say those are our top three categories.”
Schmitt says winter gear and clothing is typically the most needed item among families looking to provide for their children through the program. Donations are due to the Kalona YMCA by Monday, December 8. For a full list of items, click here.
