The Winfield-Mt. Union girls basketball team dropped their first contest of the young season Tuesday, a 53-28 loss in Packwood to Pekin. The Panther defense dictated action much of the night, shutting out the Wolves in the first quarter as Pekin built an 11-0 lead. The Panther advantage was 29-7 at half after an 18-7 run that spanned the full second frame. Pekin extended the lead to 44-16 after three and finished out the win. The Panthers shot 43% to the Lady Wolves 24. Pekin won the boards 35-26, assists 14-9, steals 16-11 and turnovers 25-21. Individually, Winfield-Mt. Union got 17 points from Madisen Kellogg. Quin Smith added 10 boards. WMU is now 1-1 on the year as Pekin stands at 1-0.
