As part of the end to the government shutdown, the Senate passed several short and long-term funding bills, including a one-year extension of some 2018 farm bill programs.

The bills also included funding for most federal agencies through January 2026 and USDA through September 30, 2026. They contain extensions for nutrition programs with provisions to ensure that even if another shutdown occurs, SNAP benefits will remain available.

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley shared his thoughts on the extension of the Five-Year Farm Bill, “So, we still have the five-year farm bill to put together, and the two chairmen of the Ag committees are working to get one put together, but I don’t think it is going to be done now until next year.”

The nutrition title of the farm bill typically reauthorizes a number of nutrition or domestic food assistance programs, including SNAP. The five-year farm bill was extended for one year.
