A Kalona woman was arrested on an out-of-state warrant for smuggling charges, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

At 8:41 a.m. Thursday, deputies responded to an unlock request at 511 C Avenue in Kalona. Upon responding, deputies arrested 41-year-old Jessica Beraza on a Texas warrant. Beraza has been charged with two counts of smuggling of persons.

Beraza appeared in Washington County Court that afternoon and waived her right to extradition, testifying that she would return to Texas voluntarily. She has a hearing scheduled to officially waive her extradition on November 14.

According to court records, Beraza is now being held without bond in the Washington County Jail.
