The City of Kalona and the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP) will host a pop-up food pantry in Southtown from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
Families will be able to pick up one box of food each at 2285 133rd Street near Vista Park in Kalona while supplies last. Residents unable to physically travel to the location can arrange a delivery with City Hall.
The pop-up pantry comes the same day that SNAP benefits, formerly known as food stamps, are set to expire amidst the ongoing federal government shutdown. The shutdown began on October 1st. The longest in history was 35 days in 2018 and 2019.
