A Wellman man was arrested following a garage fire Thursday night.

At 9:54 p.m. on Thursday, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a fire in an unattached garage at 1200 7th Avenue in Wellman. A second call at around the same time reported that 57-year-old Richard Williams, one of the house’s occupants, had lit the garage on fire and was still inside.

The Wellman, Keota, and Kalona Fire Departments, Alliant Energy, City of Wellman, and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. The fire was extinguished. Williams was arrested for reckless use of a fire, a serious misdemeanor.

The investigation is ongoing.
