The Winfield-Mt. Union football team entered Senior Night Friday with the need for a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. WMU couldn’t keep up with the visitors from Belle Plaine, dropping a shootout 56-42. The Plainesmen held a 14-8 lead after one and were on top 28-8 at half. Each team put up 20 in the third and the Wolves won the fourth 14-8 but couldn’t complete the comeback. On Saturday’s KCII Radio Coaches Corner, head coach Scott McCarty talked about the night for his team. “First series of the game our guys did a really good job of marching it down and we ended up with (Nick) Sparrow with a touchdown then we went pretty stagnant. They were doing some different things that we hadn’t seen, but in the second half we really did a good job of completing passes and getting the ball out on time. Cody Milks started getting into a groove and we really started to move the ball. Max Edwards and Tayson (Samuels) each had a couple touchdown catches. We’re anchored up front by Grant Anderson, Gabe Cummings and Wyatt Palmer. We put up 40 points, it just wasn’t enough. Offensively, our guys did a lot of really good things. The problem was we couldn’t stop them either and we couldn’t get out of our own way. We got lost in pass coverage a couple of times, but it was a fun atmosphere on Senior Night nonetheless for our kids.”
BP won total yards 532-368, including 409-62 on the ground and turnovers 1-0. Belle Plaine quarterback Aiden Timm led everyone with 426 all-purpose yards, 273 rushing, and accounted for all eight touchdowns, split evenly between the ground and air. Cody Milks led the Wolves with a 24 of 36 night throwing for 306 yards and four touchdowns. Tayson Samuels had 14 catches for 190 yards and two touchdowns. Max Edwards hauled in the other two scoring throws. Nick Sparrow and Milks each ran for a touchdown. Grant Anderson led the defense with 11 tackles. The Wolves honored four players on Senior Night including Nick Sparrow, Max Edwards, Grant Anderson and Gabe Cummings. The Wolves end the year with a 2-5 overall record, 2-3 mark in district. BP qualifies for the playoffs at 4-4 overall and 4-2 in District 5.
