The Washington Marching Demons brought home awards this weekend. The Demons participated Saturday in West Liberty and Muscatine at their respective invitationals. They came home with a second place finish and outstanding percussion award from West Liberty, and an eighth place finish at Muscatine.

This year’s show is called “The Summoning” with a spooky theme. Director Don Hughes shared what the show entails and how they decided on this theme, “All of these pieces were written around the idea of, The Night on Bald Mountain was supposed to be summoning spirits. Dance Macabre was skeletons dancing from the graves, and then the Flying Dutchmen really isn’t as much of a summoning as it is a curse. A sailor that cursed the devil and he didn’t really like that so he was doomed to sail on his ship forever, and could only make landfall once every seven years. The kids wanted to go back to, we had a long run where we sort of did a creepy theme, and some of the kids were saying we should go back, we should do that again. So, that’s where we went – it’s creepy.”

The band will be participating in a total of five competitions this year with the final run on October 18th at the state festival in Pella.
