Despite a season that didn’t play out as planned, the Highland High School Marching Band delivered a senior night performance to a perfectly-themed pink out crowd on Thursday night.
After losing several of its outdoor performances, Highland band director Andy McDonald began a search for other ways for his students to perform the Wicked music they’ve rehearsed for the past two months. Following discussions with administration, two volleyball games were placed on the schedule.
The pink-out theme for the volleyball match paired with the band’s green show shirts for its performance of music from the Broadway musical and currently mid-release movie “Wicked,” which uses the same color palette throughout the show. McDonald said that, while the color coordination was unintentional, he was happy with his band’s performance in spite of the unique locale, “They handled it well, they were more focused on playing than dodging loose balls, and a couple of them got hit. I was doing my best to catch them and swat them away while they were playing, but I can’t get to all of them as much as I wish I could.”
The band will perform its music one final time on October 9 in Highland’s final home volleyball match against Columbus.
