Coming off of back-to-back wins, the No. 3 team in the class proved to be too much for Sigourney-Keota as they fell to Iowa City Regina 41-7.
The game started with a bang as Regina sophomore Gabriel Hegelheimer took the opening kickoff 95 yards to the house for a touchdown to establish a 7-0 lead.
Things began to snowball quickly, as on the Cobras’ first drive of the game, starting tailback Ike Molyneux fumbled and Regina recovered. A four-play drive, capped off with a 5-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Kyle Tracy, quickly set the score at 14-0. A three-and-out and a 61-yard rush from star running back Savion Miller later, it was 21-0, which remained the score at the end of the first quarter.
Sigourney-Keota found a momentary spark early in the second quarter, as junior linebacker Carson O’Rourke flew in for a touchdown-saving interception at the goal line, ripping the ball out of Miller’s hands. He took a jet sweep on the ensuing drive for 51 yards, but the play was called back due to a careless holding penalty. From there on, it was all Regals.
Regina punched in two more scores before the end of the half to turn on the running clock, heading to the locker room with a 35-0 lead.
The Regals took full advantage of that running clock, burning ten minutes off on their lone drive of the third quarter and punching in a touchdown to make it 41-0.
Sigourney-Keota showed signs of life on its final drive of the game, as Molyneux ran for 44 yards and a touchdown in the final minute to turn off the running clock with 7 seconds remaining, making the score 41-7, where it remained as time expired.
Cobra head coach Jared Jensen described what his team will need to do as they head into a matchup with district foe Durant next week, “We’re going to have to play our brand of football, be the more physical football team on the field and execute. That’s something we haven’t done, execution will be the biggest thing, knowing where you’re going and giving the guys with the ball an opportunity.”
The Cobras will take on the Wildcats next week in a battle that will likely determine second place in the district and potential home field advantage come the playoffs.
