An individual unaffiliated with the Washington Municipal Band has been fraudulently soliciting money from community members, band board president Paul Towner says.
According to Towner, the scam came to his attention when the person knocked on the door of a member of the band, who immediately alerted him to what was going on.
The individual, described by the band member as a young man, was claiming to be collecting money for the band’s capital campaign. According to Towner, the campaign has not yet started, and the band will not be going door-to-door requesting money in the form of cash, “In the spring we’re going to have the rollout, and we won’t be asking people to donate cash, we’ll probably be asking people to donate by checks made out to the Greater Cedar Rapids Foundation, and on the memo line write ‘Washington Municipal Band.’”
Towner advised that anyone who is solicited by the scammer should contact local law enforcement authorities.
