A Blue Grass man was arrested in Kalona Tuesday on multiple charges.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office arrested 24-year-old John Rushman on domestic abuse assault, violation of a no contact order, interference with official acts, assault on persons in certain occupations, and registration violation.
According to court documents, deputies were called to a residence in Kalona around 5:30 a.m. for a report of a domestic abuse assault. Rushman allegedly wrapped his hands around the victim’s neck and squeezed for approximately 30 seconds to a minute. Bruises were visible on the victim upon the deputy’s arrival at the scene. Rushman and the victim were in a relationship at the time of the assault.
Rushman’s criminal history showed that he has a prior domestic abuse assault charge against him.
After officials arrived on scene, they were advised that Rushman had driven his vehicle from the residence down the street where the vehicle supposedly died. Rushman appeared to be heavily intoxicated with watery eyes, slurred speech, and was described as unsteady on his feet. He refused Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. He then tried to go to his vehicle to show the deputy that the vehicle was dead, the deputy attempted to place him under arrest. Rushman pulled away and proceeded to run. The deputy ordered Rushman to stop and warned he would be tased, to which he refused. Rushman was tased and taken into custody.
A search warrant for a blood draw was applied for and conducted on Rushman for operating while under the influence. While leaving the Washington County ER, Rushman allegedly tried multiple times to trip deputies while walking out.
A court date has yet to be set.
