An ordinance that would overhaul the City of Riverside’s nuisance process was discussed at their recent city council meeting.
The ordinance would bring it in line with international municipal code guidelines. The goal is to create consistency and clarity, according to City Administrator Cole Smith, “The International Property Maintenance Code establishes a lot of definitions or standards for how property maintenance is done. Examples of this could be like for commercial buildings, how much of the building can be allowed to have chipped paint, general property maintenance things that give us a little bit more specifics and clarity than what our current ordinance has done.”
The new ordinance will streamline processes both for the city and for residents who are charged with nuisance violations, establishing an appeals process through the city council.
Also being considered by the council is a replacement of the current weeds, vines and brush ordinance to bring it in line with the new nuisance ordinance.
The ordinances will return for second reading at the council’s next meeting on October 6.
