The Washington Demon football team will be looking to get back on the right track with an upset win over the No. 10 in Class 3A Independence Mustangs tonight in a game you can hear on KCII.
The Demons enter tonight 0-1 on the season after a loss to rival Mid-Prairie in week one. Washington won total yardage 358-292, including the run game 220-156. Both teams had two turnovers. Kael Williams completed 10 of his 21 passes for 138 yards, two touchdowns, an interception, and added over 100 rushing yards and a score in the ground game. Liam Roberts was the leading receiver with a 49-yard touchdown catch. Nic Stone also had a one-yard touchdown reception. Blaine Rees led defensively with nine tackles. Carson Ryan had a fumble recovery, and Caden Greiner a pick. Ryan returned a kickoff 80 yards for a score in the first quarter of action.
Independence is 1-0 on the year after a runaway victory over North Fayette Valley 47-14 last Friday. The Mustangs led 8-7 after the opening frame, 28-7 at half and 34-7 after the third. They won total yards 472-240, including a dominant 265-47 edge in the passing game, and a 2-0 win in the turnover battle. Individually, Christopher Meyer was one of the best 3A quarterbacks in week one, completing 13 of 19 passes for 231 yards and two TDs. Meyer also carried 11 times for 121 yards and three more scores. Through the air, seven different receivers caught a pass, led by Dawson Fuelling’s 67-yard catch. Defensively, Braylen Bieber racked up 12-and-a-half stops for the ‘Stangs, which is currently the leader in 3A. Nicholas Mostek and Dawson Shaw each have a fumble recovery.
This week, Washington head coach Kelly Williams spoke with KCII Sports about what he sees in the No. 10 Mustangs, and the Demons’ keys to victory.
“Very well coached. They’ve been in the playoffs eight out of the last ten years. Their kids are hard-nosed. If you look at them, they’re a lot like our kids. They’re going to play hard every down. They’re pretty balanced. We’ll be dialed in on Friday night,” Williams said. “Offensively, keep on track. Positive downs, try not to get to a third and long situation, keep the chains moving. Defensively, we continue to talk about that third down.”
In the Varsity Bound era, the Demons have only met once with Independence dating back to 2014, and were winners in that matchup 24-17.
