The Sigourney-Keota Cobra football team is in search of their first win on the season when they welcome the Wilton Beavers for their home opener. SK started the year at top 10 in Class 2A PCM last week, dropping the contest with the Mustangs 47-18. They trailed 14-6 at the break. The Cobras were outgained 352-270 in total yards, including 197-123 through the air, but by just eight on the ground. PCM won the turnover battle 3-1. Individual leaders for Sigourney-Keota included Ike Molyneux with 50 rushing yards on 19 carries. Chase Clarahan connected on a 63-yard touchdown throw to John Berg for the passing and receiving lead and Landon Conrad and Brayden Wood added rushing scores. On defense, Jacob Libe, Blake Baker, and Berg each had six tackles, and Baker recovered a fumble.
Wilton lost their opener 42-20 at home to Iowa City Regina. The Beavers were outgained 353-257 in total, including 233-133 on the ground. The Regals won the turnover battle 2-1. Wilton was led by Gunner Edwards at 12 of 24 passing for 124 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Bryer Putman had four catches for 74 yards and a score. Hayden Hill led on the ground with 17 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown. Edwards added a running score. Defensively, Hill had nine tackles, three for loss and Gabe Brisker intercepted a pass. This week, SK head coach Jared Jensen spoke on the KCII Radio Coaches Corner about his teams keys in week two.
Jensen said, “(In practice) you have to be able to do both. You have to get prepared for who you are going to be playing and at the same time, work on yourselves. If you aren’t doing what you do very well, you’re going to be in trouble, whether you’re super-prepared for other team or not. We know this is going to be another tough game. They hung in with Regina pretty tight until the end. We’re going to fix what we need to fix for ourselves and focus on the gameplan for Wilton.”
These teams have met six times since 2011, with Wilton winning four. The Cobras won the last meeting in 2019 40-6. Action starts tonight at 7p.m. At Sigourney High School.
