The Washington Demon boys and girls cross country teams travel to the Iowa City Kickers complex tonight for the Bob Brown Invitational hosted by Iowa City Regina. The Demons started the season Saturday at the Blue Raider Invitational in Anamosa, where the Washington girls finished third in the team race, led by an individual championship for Iris Dahl and third for Kora Miller. The Washington boys were fifth in the team standings with a fifth from Andrew Rees to lead individually. The Demons appear in the newest poll issued by the Iowa Association of Track Coaches. The girls are No. 18 in the Class 3A team rankings. Individually, Dahl is No. 13 for the girls and Rees No. 14 for the boys. Washington head coach Stefanie Haworth joined the KCII PM Sports page to talk about the goals for the Demons in their second meet. “I know we’re going to compare ourselves to some of the kids that we just saw. Like Kora (Miller) was ahead of the whole Solon pack, so we want to make sure that she maintains that. I know some of the boys want to move up with some of those Solon kids, so if we can do that, progress will be made. Courses are very different. The course at Iowa City Regina seems to be a tad long so times aren’t usually quite as fast there, but you can compare it to previous years. We need to make sure our pack stays tight, we continue to improve, feel stronger, and as a team, move up in the team finishes.”
Washington will be joined at tonight’s meet by the No. 6 in 2A Anamosa boys and their girls, Calamus-Wheatland, the No. 15 in 2A Cascade girls and their boys, Clear Creek Amana, the No. 15 in 2A Monticello boys and their No. 18 girls, North Cedar, Prince of Peace, the No. 5 in 3A Solon girls and their No. 17 boys, the No. 11 in 1A Springville boys and their girls, the No. 14 in 2A Tipton boys and their girls, West Liberty, the No. 12 in 3A Western Dubuque boys and their girls, Wilton and the home Regals. Action starts at 4p.m. And continues into the evening in Iowa City.
