A project featuring a local coach and pillar of the high school running community is approaching the finish line. Former Columbus Community track and cross country coach and current announcer Mike Jay will be featured in an upcoming documentary. The film, titled “Track Guy,” is set to premiere later this month in Iowa City.

The movie, produced by Poeisis Media LLC, a production company founded by two University of Iowa alumni last year, focuses on Jay’s work both in the press box and through his titular Track Guy Foundation. The foundation gifts shoes and awards scholarships to Iowa student-athletes and hosts speaking engagements and other events across the state.

Jay described his reaction when the directors reached out to him about their idea for the film, “At first I thought it was a prank, that somebody put them up to it. I’m a very humble person, it’s honestly kind of uncomfortable to me still. They’re great kids… they thought it was a worthy first project for them and I hope it will be so, they’ve worked very hard on it.”

Jay coached for 25 years and his voice can be heard at local meets and state contests.

The movie is set to release with a premiere at the Englert Theater in Iowa City on September 14 at 2 p.m.
