No rain, cramps or other wild sequences could stop the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team Friday night, as they made sure they came out on top of their Washington County rivals Washington in a game heard live on KCII.
The Demons would begin the game with the football, wasting no time in finding pay dirt with a six-play 87 yard touchdown drive that resulted in a 15-yard Kael Williams rushing score. On the ensuing kickoff, Washington senior Carson Ryan would poke the ball free from Golden Hawk sophomore Ryan Henry to give the Demons the ball back at the Mid-Prairie 30 yard line. It was again another scoring drive for the Demons, when three plays later, Williams found tight end Nic Stone for Washington’s first passing touchdown of the year to go up 15-0 with Williams’ successful two-point conversion attempt. The Hawks would answer with a four-yard Hudson Ehrenfelt plunge on their second drive of the game in response, but Washington would pull a rabbit out of their hat once again when Ryan broke free on the next kickoff. Mid-Prairie found their footing in the second frame, coming back to take the lead off of a Tommy Miller TD run late in the first half to make the score 29-22 at the break. The Hawks would add on a pair more touchdowns in the third before Washington found an answer on a 49-yard Williams pass to Liam Roberts to draw back within two scores. While the Demons would attempt to make a late surge, their efforts came up short, handing Mid-Prairie their first win over Washington since 2008 by a final of 50-34.
Unofficially, Washington lost the game but won total yardage 315-208, 206 of which on the ground. In his first varsity start at QB, junior Brooks Weber completed 13 passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns, both to newcomer Nolan Jergens. Jergens finished with 47 receiving yards, while Ehrenfelt began his senior season by carrying 18 times for 97 yards and three TDs. Williams led the way for the Demons, passing for 109 yards, rushing for 86 and accounting for three offensive touchdowns. Grant Whisler added 60 rushing yards and a TD, while Carson Brown had 42 receiving yards. Weber earned Washington County Hospital and Clinics Player of the Game honors live on the Community First Credit Union Postgame Show, and he joined KCII Sports postgame to talk about his first career start and the win.
