The Hawkeye football season begins on Saturday, and a 10-year-old from Wapello has been named one of the team’s kid captains for a game this season.
Harper Atkinson was selected as the captain for the Hawkeyes’ November 8th matchup against Oregon. Atkinson joined 11 other children across the state of Iowa and their families in a tour of Kinnick Stadium earlier this month on Iowa’s “Kids’ Day,” and she will be recognized at the November 8th home game.
Harper is being treated for what the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital calls a truly unique condition which has caused her to break 35 bones throughout her life. According to the university, her care team believes she is the only person in the world with this condition. Also diagnosed with craniosynostosis and Chiari malformation, while there is no known cure for her condition, UIHC says her symptoms are being managed by a dedicated team of doctors.
