The City of Kalona reviewed and approved its 2024-2025 road use report at its meeting last Monday.

The report summarizes the use of state road use funds by the city throughout the previous fiscal year. The City of Kalona received around $370,000 in such funding in 2024-2025, an amount based on Kalona’s 2020 census population of 2,630. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says the city uses the funding for both standard repair and maintenance, including snow removal and larger construction projects.

The primary project the city used the funds for last year was an eight-block project on H Avenue from 6th to 14th Street, where the city removed two inches of road, resurfaced it and replaced manhole covers. Other repairs included concrete repair on tenth street and small projects on older roads.

Schlabaugh described what road projects are on the horizon for the next 12 months, “We’re going to do 6th Street from E Avenue, which is Highway 22 where the stoplights are, all the way south to B Avenue. We’re going to do a full 2.5-inch removal and overlay on that street as well. It’ll fix an area where we’ve had some spot failing of concrete and we’ve had some gaps that have expanded, we just want to mitigate that now.”

The 6th Street project will begin later this fall. To hear the full interview with Schlabaugh, tune in to today’s In Touch With Southeast Iowa.
