The WACO Warriors’ intrasquad scrimmage went off without a hitch on KCII3 Friday night, as the team played 80 minutes of nonstop football in preparation for the upcoming 2025 season.
Both of WACO’s starting quarterback candidates showed explosive potential with both their arms and their feet. Junior Hayden Shelman produced the play of the night, taking a read option for a 60-yard scamper to the end zone as he ran for 126 yards and passed for 108 with a touchdown and two interceptions. Shelman was involved in five of the six longest plays of the night for the Warriors.
Senior Nick West was the more consistent quarterback, especially in the early going as he threw for two touchdown passes in the early game to go with one pick and 78 yards. He also ran for 62 yards and a score.
Head coach Chad Edeker described what he saw out of his top two signal callers, “I saw gamers because we haven’t thrown the ball that well all year. Practice throwing has been a little rough, and that was a lot more accurate and a lot more efficient, so I think that was a good job.”
WACO’s receiving room also showed balance, as five Warriors hauled in multiple catches. The room was led by tight end Levi Brown, who picked up 52 yards on his two snags.
The final touchdown of the night came from running back Niles Reichenbach, who punched in a tough ten yard run to the left side after breaking multiple tackles.
Defensively, WACO’s dominant linemen Trey Edeker and Adam Stafford caused their usual chaos in the backfield, forcing the team’s quarterbacks to scramble almost constantly while leading the defenses to picking up 21 combined tackles for loss.
The Warriors return to action next Friday as they take on Central City, who WACO knocked out of last year’s playoffs.
