The Washington Demon football team took their first steps toward success Friday night at Case Field for the first time in the 2025 season after facing the Muscatine Muskies in a scrimmage heard live on KCII.

Both teams were given the opportunity to run a total of 20 offensive plays on the night split into 10 going each direction beginning at each side’s 20-yard line. No time or score was kept. Washington began the evening with the football, but struggled to string solid plays together, driving a total of just 19 yards with a pair of fumbles. The series was highlighted by a Kael Williams 19-yard pass to sophomore Liam Roberts after the beginning of the drive went in reverse. Muscatine would do no better, advancing a mere 16 yards. After both sides got a short break for coaches to break down their team’s first possession, the Demons would start to move the ball, moving into enemy territory for the first time all evening. The Muskies would close the night’s action by doing the same on their second drive, going as far as the Washington 38-yard line.

Unofficially, Washington outgained Muscatine in total yardage 55-42, with the Muskies winning the rushing battle 42-19 and Washington taking the aerial game 36-0. Williams completed seven of his eight passes for all 36 yards, while Roberts had 21 receiving yards and Carson Brown 15 rushing yards. Muscatine went 0/2 on passes and Gaven Wade ran for 39 yards on eight carries.

Washington head coach Kelly Williams joined KCII Sports live postgame to give his thoughts on the night.

“We haven’t worked on the odd front yet. We struggled a little bit there. We just have to get more reps in practice,” Williams said. “Defensively, saw a lot of good things and some things that we can correct. Got to feel pretty good. We’re moving on, we’re into game week. We got out of it [the scrimmage] healthy.”

The Demons will return to action next Friday night when they renew a rivalry matchup with Mid-Prairie for the first time since 2017. You can hear the matchup live on FM 106.1, the KCII1 App and KCIIRadio.com beginning with pregame coverage at 7 p.m.
